The Osun State Police Command has summoned Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East Senatorial District, over his viral comment directing supporters to “kill” members of the Accord Party—a remark that has sparked widespread outrage ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

The invitation followed public backlash over comments the senator allegedly made during an All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign rally in Ilesa on Tuesday.

In a letter dated August 11, 2026, the police directed Fadahunsi to appear before the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Osogbo on Wednesday, August 12, at 11am, to clarify the circumstances surrounding the statement.

The letter, signed by the Commissioner of Police, Elections, Osun State, Samuel Etaifo Erale, stated that the invitation was based on information available to the police concerning statements allegedly made by the senator during the campaign.

The police described the remarks as potentially “threatening, inciting and intimidating,” noting that the video had circulated widely across electronic and social media platforms.

The controversy began after a video surfaced online in which Fadahunsi, speaking in Yoruba, was heard directing APC supporters to kill members of the Accord Party whenever they encountered them.

The comment quickly went viral, drawing condemnation from various quarters, including civil society organisations, political opponents, and concerned citizens who viewed the statement as a direct call to violence.

Following the backlash, the senator sought to clarify the remark, insisting that it had been misinterpreted.

His media team issued a statement titled: “Kill Osun Accord with Votes, Not Violence,” explaining that the comment was intended as a political metaphor and a call for voters to reject the Accord Party through lawful and peaceful means at the August 15 governorship election.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the senator’s statement was purely political and metaphorical,” the team said in the statement.

The development comes amid heightened political tension ahead of the governorship election, with the incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke, who is seeking re-election on the Accord Party platform, repeatedly accusing the APC of using thugs to attack his supporters.

The police summons is expected to provide an opportunity for Fadahunsi to clarify the context and intent of his remarks, as authorities move to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
