The Department of State Services (DSS) forcefully arrested human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore within the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja, dragging him into custody following a chaotic judicial session.

The dramatic confrontation, captured on a live broadcast, saw secret police operatives physically overpower the African Action Congress (AAC) leader, igniting fierce national uproar and highlighting the widening crack in Nigeria’s judicial independence.

What Happened: Pandemonium in the Temples of Justice
On Monday, June 22, 2026, Omoyele Sowore appeared before Justice Mohammed Umar to address an ongoing legal battle. Days prior, on June 16, the court had revoked his bail and issued a bench warrant after alleging he failed to attend a previous trial date—a claim strongly disputed by his supporters who maintain Sowore has never skipped a court date while in the country.
During the June 22 hearing, Justice Umar dismissed an application by Sowore requesting that the judge recuse himself on grounds of blatant bias. The court then ordered that Sowore be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the determination of his application for a stay of execution.

The critical breakdown of constitutional order occurred immediately following the adjournment. Instead of allowing the Nigerian Correctional Service to execute the lawful remand order, armed DSS operatives ambushed Sowore within the court premises. In a scene that resembled a lawless abduction rather than a state-sanctioned procedure, an operative grabbed Sowore by the waist, rough-handling and injuring him while shielding him from his fiercely resisting legal team and screaming loyalists.

Why It Happened: The High Cost of Dissent
The immediate legal catalyst for this aggressive state crackdown is a ongoing cyberstalking and criminal defamation trial initiated by the DSS. The federal government filed a multi-count charge against Sowore following high-profile social media posts on X and Facebook. In those publications, Sowore fiercely criticized President Bola Tinubu’s assertions made during an official visit to Brazil—where the President claimed his administration had effectively eradicated corruption in Nigeria. Sowore openly labeled the President “a criminal” and accused his administration of blatant deception.
However, the real undercurrent of this hostility runs much deeper than a single social media post:

The Editorial Verdict: An Assault on the Constitution
The DSS’s decision to intercept a citizen and override a direct judicial command specifying a correctional facility remand is a terrifying display of executive overreach. It signals to the public that the secret police view themselves as completely above the law they are sworn to protect.

When state actors disregard the sanctity of the courtroom to roughhandle political opponents, democracy is reduced to a performance. True democratic governance dictates that if a citizen breaks the law, they are tried transparently—not battered inside a hall of justice.
The Tinubu administration must understand that crushing dissent does not cure economic hardship or systemic corruption; it merely amplifies it.

The DSS must immediately return Sowore to the proper legal custody mandated by the court, cease its intimidation of opposition voices, and respect the constitutional boundaries of the judiciary. If Nigeria continues down this path of state-sponsored lawlessness, it risks trading its hard-won democracy for a dictatorship masquerading as a republic.
